Online or In Person? Choosing the Therapy That Fits Your Life

June 24, 2026 Tim Carney

One of the first questions people ask is whether to meet online or in person. The good news: research shows both are effective for most concerns. The right choice is the one that helps you show up consistently.

When online works well

Telehealth can be a great fit if you:

  • Have a busy schedule or a long commute
  • Prefer the comfort of your own space
  • Live a bit further from Mequon
  • Want more flexibility week to week

All you need is a private spot and a stable internet connection. Many people find it easier to open up from a familiar place.

When in person works well

Meeting face to face can be a better fit if you:

  • Find it easier to focus away from home distractions
  • Value the ritual of leaving the house for your own time
  • Prefer the connection of sharing a physical space

What about children and couples?

For younger clients, in-person play-based sessions are often ideal, though online can work for many families. For couples, either format works well; what matters most is that both partners can be present and undistracted.

You do not have to choose forever

Plenty of people mix and match, meeting in person some weeks and online others as life changes. We can adjust as we go.

The bottom line

There is no wrong answer. Pick the format that makes it easiest to keep showing up for yourself, and know that we can change course any time.
